Strangers on a Train— Beyond the Movie Monster: What Psychopathy Really Looks Like

He’s witty, well dressed, and impossible to shake. He’s also one of cinema’s most notorious psychopaths. In Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train, Bruno Antony turns a casual chat between two passengers into a deadly bargain, and he has no intention of letting tennis star Guy Haines walk away from it. But what actually makes someone like Bruno tick? In conjunction with the screening, licensed psychologist Dr. Tina D.W. Myers, Director of the Forensic Treatment Mall at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System and a published researcher on psychopathy, will separate Hollywood myth from clinical reality. Drawing on her forensic work, Dr. Myers will explore what the term “psychopath” really means, how genetics, childhood, and environment may shape psychopathic traits, and what separates violence committed in the heat of the moment from violence planned with cool detachment.
