Based on the popular Marvel superhero, playboy billionaire and genius Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the successful CIO of Stark Industries. While in Afghanistan to demonstrate the ultimate Jericho missile developed by his company, his military convoy is attacked, and Tony is kidnapped by a group of rebels that want him to assemble a missile for their use. Held captive in a cave for three months, Tony develops a unique weaponized suit of armor that allows him to escape. Once back home, he begins work on perfecting the Iron Man suit. But the man who was put in charge of Stark Industries, Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), has plans to use Tony's technology for his own purposes.
