The Charlotte Film Society (CFS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1982, has fostered community through the shared experience of cinema for more than four decades. In 2022, CFS expanded its impact by opening The Independent Picture House (IPH), Charlotte's only nonprofit arthouse cinema dedicated to year-round programming of independent, international, and arthouse films. In addition to operating the cinema, CFS produces the annual Charlotte Film Festival and a wide range of educational and community-centered film programs that encourage dialogue, inspire curiosity, and connect audiences through the arts.

Located in Charlotte's diverse Sugar Creek corridor, IPH serves one of the region's fastest-growing and most culturally vibrant communities. Our audiences include film enthusiasts, students, educators, artists, families, and lifelong learners from across the Charlotte metropolitan area. Through thoughtfully curated programming and post-screening discussions, IPH creates opportunities for audiences to engage with contemporary issues spanning the arts, science, history, health, and civic life.

Expanding access to meaningful cultural experiences is central to our mission. We work intentionally to reduce financial, geographic, and social barriers to participation through free student memberships, discounted facility rentals for educators and nonprofit organizations, affordable ticket pricing, and free public programs throughout the year.

Beyond our theater walls, IPH extends its reach through Indie on Wheels, our mobile cinema initiative that brings films and facilitated discussions directly to libraries, schools, recreation centers, and community spaces, eliminating transportation barriers for many residents. Our Community Impact Film Series partners with local nonprofits, healthcare organizations, universities, and subject-matter experts to explore issues such as mental health, public health, environmental sustainability, and social justice through film and conversation.

These partnerships reflect our belief that cinema is a catalyst for lifelong learning and civic engagement. By creating welcoming spaces where audiences can explore complex ideas alongside filmmakers, scholars, scientists, and community leaders, IPH fulfills its mission to educate, engage, and enable diverse communities through the transformative power of film.
