gardenacinema.com.v2.yourcinema.co/friends-of-gardena-cinema-a-501c3-non-profit-organizationFriends of Gardena Cinema is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit preserving the Gardena Cinema as an accessible cultural landmark and community gathering space. Opened in 1946, the single-screen theater has been operated by the Kim family since 1976. They continuously adapted its programming to serve the neighborhood, including Spanish-language films for the Latino community. The family welcomed students by offering them a safe place to watch films and receive homework help—an early example of the Cinema’s role extending beyond film exhibition. After the pandemic threatened the theater’s survival, owner Judy Kim and community members formed Friends of Gardena Cinema in 2023—not simply to preserve a building, but to keep the South Bay’s only independent movie theater active and responsive to its neighbors. Today, nearly 100 volunteers contribute staffing, programming, marketing, event planning, and outreach. The cinema welcomes about 12,500 attendees annually. We serve one of Los Angeles County’s most culturally diverse areas, while drawing audiences from across Southern California and beyond. Patrons include families, seniors, students, independent filmmakers, genre fans, and residents whose stories are rarely represented at commercial multiplexes. Frequent Q&As connect audiences directly with filmmakers, performers, and crew.
Reaching underserved audiences is central to our work. We present independent, culturally specific, and locally made films that receive limited theatrical exposure. Our monthly short-film showcase features about 80 selections annually, giving emerging artists access to an 800-seat screen and live audience. Partnerships with schools, nonprofits, local businesses, and cultural groups help support our specialized screenings. We keep our screenings affordable: regular tickets are $12. Q&A and proposed Science on Screen events are $15. A $25 membership includes a free film, snack-bar items, and other discounts. We also offer senior discounts and host free weekly Matin-AA recovery meetings. Accessibility offerings include closed and open captioning, ASL-supported screenings, and opportunities to try emerging technology like the Hana system for patrons with hearing, vision, or language-access needs. Friends of Gardena Cinema exists because the community refused to let its neighborhood screen go dark. We are sustaining an affordable place where people can see themselves onscreen, meet the people behind the stories, and know the space belongs to them.
