Established in 2013, Cinema Detroit is a community-based non-profit arthouse movie theater, delivering an eclectic and progressive mix of films and providing a space for film-related gatherings and discussions. It is the only first-run theater in Greater Downtown and provides access in an underserved area to a variety of filmed media including commercial, specialty, independent, classic, cult, and locally-made works, with space held for work by those who have been historically excluded from the film industry — work that would never see exhibition elsewhere in the Metro Detroit area.

Cinema Detroit attracts people from all walks of life to its film screenings, roundtable discussions, and Q & A sessions with filmmakers, educators, and community organizers, creating a space for shared cultural experience and dialogue that is exceptional in Detroit and Michigan. No other film-related entity in metro Detroit can claim quite the same combination of service and entertainment.
