Balam— Science on Screen en Español – Shoot for the Stars!

In this special NYICFF Spanish and Latin American Indigenous language screening program, HOLA CINE, we'll be featuring the Sloan-supported animated film BALAM, by Gulliermo Casarin, and discussing the history of astronomy in early Mayan Culture.

Film Synopsis

A young girl stumbles upon a mysterious lost Mayan city.

Itzel, a young girl of Mayan descent, goes on a camping trip deep in the jungle with her father. As they stargaze together, Itzel's curiosity leads her to a discovery she never could have anticipated, demonstrating the sophisticated understanding of astronomy of her ancient Mayan ancestors and her own bright future, where new discoveries await.

    About the Speaker

    Eileen Level is a youth media educator for NYICFF who co-launched an after-school media program designed to equip youth with digital learning tools to enhance their creativity and self-expression while developing social, emotional, and critical thinking skills. Eileen holds a Master's degree in Media Management and a Social Impact Entrepreneurship Fellowship from The New School.
