Cemetery Shorts— What is Terramation?

Join us for our annual Cemetery Shorts program at Green-Wood Cemetery. These short films wander through grief, memory, and the strange, beautiful terrain between presence and absence.

Prior to the films, we will be joined by Pablo Metz vo-foudner of Meine Erde and Theresa Wozunk from Green-Wood Cemetery’s Memorial Counseling team. Together, they will give a presentation exploring how the 40-day process of terramation works, its environmental benefits, and the growing interest in sustainable end-of-life options.

Terramation is a new environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial and cremation. Through a carefully managed process to transform human remains into nutrient-rich earth, this process uses science and the power of ritual to provide a sustainable choice for end-of-life plans. This method significantly reduces carbon emissions and resource use compared to conventional disposition practices.

About the Speaker

Meine Erde is addressing the problem of conventional burials being environmentally harmful by offering fossil free alternative to cremation. Their new burial technology transforms the body into fertile soil in just 40 days with the help of natural microorganisms and plant materials, binding the carbon contained in the body and enriching the soil with its nutrients. And their solution is affordable for all.
