Film Synopsis
An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon.
When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean could exist beneath the surface of one of Jupiter’s icy moons, Europa Ventures, a privately funded space exploration company, sends six of the best astronauts from around the world to confirm the data and search for potential life. After a near-catastrophic technical failure that leads to loss of communication with Earth and the tragic death of a crewmember, the surviving astronauts must overcome the psychological and physical toll of deep space travel, and survive a discovery on Europa more profound than they had ever imagined. Using a found-footage format, Europa Report is part-faux documentary, part-sci-fi thriller.
About the Speaker
Dr. Lewis M. Duncan currently serves as provost of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Previously, he served as president of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, a position he held since 2004, earning the George D. and Harriet W. Cornell Professorship of Distinguished Presidential Leadership.
Dr. Duncan is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of space plasma physics, high-power radio wave propagation, and radar studies of the upper atmosphere. Recently, he has become a national spokesperson for STEM educational reform and for the translational values of an applied liberal education.
Previously, Dr. Duncan served as dean of engineering and professor of engineering sciences at the Thayer School of Engineering of Dartmouth College. Administratively, he led in establishing the Institute for Security Technology Studies, the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection, and the MacLean Engineering Sciences Center at Dartmouth. He is also a founding director of Angeli Parvi, a highly successful nonprofit early-stage technology-oriented venture capital fund supporting faculty and student innovation and entrepreneurship.
Duncan received his BA in physics and mathematics, and his MS and PhD in space physics from Rice University.
