Primer— Understanding Time

A discussion about the possibilities of time travel and our understanding of time from the perspective of theoretical physicists.

Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe, NM

Film Synopsis

Four friends and fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there's something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they've built, wrestle over their new invention.

Two friends (Shane Carruth, David Sullivan) invent a form of time travel, and though they think they are being smart about using it, within just five days, selfishness and shortsightedness lead them to create so many overlapping timelines that they lose control of themselves, their friendship, and the technology.

About the Speaker

Dr. Cristopher Moore received his BA in physics, mathematics, and integrated science from Northwestern University, and his PhD in physics from Cornell. He has published over 120 papers at the boundary between physics and computer science, ranging from quantum computing to phase transitions in NP-complete problems to the theory of social networks and efficient algorithms for analyzing their structure. With Stephan Mertens, he is the author of The Nature of Computation, published by Oxford University Press. He is a professor at the Santa Fe Institute.

In 2014, Dr. Moore was named a fellow of the American Physical Society for fundamental contributions to the interface between nonlinear physics, statistical physics, and computer science, including complex network analysis, phase transitions in NP-complete problems, and the computational complexity of physical simulation.
